What is Product Management?

“Product management is the job of looking after a specific product within a business. It’s a role at the very heart of an organization that needs to balance the need to deliver value to your company (usually profit) with what customers want and what’s technically and operationally possible.”

Typically the product manager sits between the UX, tech, and business teams. This varies according to the product itself, the company structure, company size and maturity…. and also according to the knowledge of product management within the organization.

What are the roles in a Product Management function?

Product Management comes in all shapes and sizes but typically you would have representatives at various levels – For the sake of simplicity I like to split them into two: Strategic and Executional.

Strategic: Organizations usually have at least one individual wearing the hat of a Chief Product Officer (sometimes VP or Director Product). This person (or more than one) would be looking at the strategic side by setting the overall objectives which are in-line with company goals and values.

Execution: Product Manager/s and Product Owner/s. These two roles are different but that`s a discussion for another time. The individuals working within the product management teams own the individual product roadmaps and manage the development of the product. The roadmaps should be aligned to the strategic objectives and available to all the teams within the business.
